IODE Atlantic Charter Chapter
Since 1947 women in the greater St.Stephen area have found fellowship, fun, and friendship as members of IODE Atlantic Charter Chapter. We work together on various projects that benefit education, literacy, community and the arts.Local Service projects may be done as a group or in some cases as individuals.
A Brief History In early December 1947, seventeen young women committed to forming what soon became the Atlantic Charter Chapter. With instructions from National to choose a name, preferably historic, the young women considered their border town communities of St. Stephen and Milltown. They reflected on how the geography, history, and families were tied to Calais, Maine. They sought a name that reflected "the ties that bind." Charter member Netta Buchanan recalled that when submitting the name and rationale she had written,"[the name] refers to the historic Charter drawn up onboard the USS Augusta at berth #2 off ship harbour, Placentia Bay, where British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill and US President, Franklin D. Roosevelt met in secrecy. This meeting became known as the most personal encounter of WW2 and is considered to be the foundation on which the United Nation Charter was laid. We chose the name because it spoke of 'the close ties' we see in our daily life on the border." Our motto: "Loyalty, Unity, Sacrifice" |
