IODE in New Brunswick Celebrates
125 Years of Service
Beginning as an organization to help injured soldiers and their families during the Boer War The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire has transformed to a charitable organization, IODE, The purpose of which is to enhance the quality of life for individuals through education support, community service and citizenship programs.
Since its inception IODE has been very active in education in New Brunswick, supporting school libraries, providing bursaries, scholarships and awards to recognize all forms of student achievement. It has been a leader in literacy initiatives starting and continuing to support Born to Read; helping to train leaders and provide materials for Roots of Empathy and supporting the provincial child and adolescent psychiatric unit and Portage.
On February 12, 2025 IODE New Brunswick will meet at Fredericton City Hall to recognize the role of Fredericton Mayor Harry Beckwith in calling the first meeting which led to the establishment of IODE. Margaret Polson Murray had written all the mayors of provincial capitals and major cities asking them to call a meeting of women of substance to start an organization to support soldiers and their families. Only Mayor Beckwith responded, and thirty-four women met and founded such an organization. Mrs. John Black was the president of the group and funds were raised very quickly.
As 125 years of service are celebrated members will party and continue the community contributions for which they are known. Join in the celebrations and help with the charitable work of IODE.
